There’s our mascot, The Wizard of Swaz, and her powerful little index (typing) finger, ready to cast a spell on you all.

The Wizard of Swaz

Greetings, Dear Reader,

This is me, casting my first spell, many years ago. I’ll be your humble guide to the wonders of the Republic of Swazzi.

Apart from the whole wizarding thing, I’m a writer, communications specialist, designer, teacher, photographer, entrepreneur, and general creator and creative problem solver. Along the way, I’ve been a silversmith, lion tamer (ok, so I volunteered), teacher (lions were way easier), web developer, amateur architect, wannabe poet, and a bunch of other things.

Acute literary OCD and creative ADD. Definitely a non-linear thinker. Hopefully entertaining.

I hope you enjoy my republic / blog.

Swazzi is a specialist in written and visual communications—a writer, designer, editor, teacher, and entrepreneur, as well as a photographer specializing in portraits and travel photography. Her words and images have appeared in various print and online projects, as well as in The Miami Herald, Mexico Edition, and Atención San Miguel.

After leading the digital graphics department at a major advertising agency and working with award-winning design firms for 10 years, she moved back to her childhood home in Mexico, where she remodeled five houses, designed and built two from scratch, and created two hospitality businesses, a café (also from scratch), and a community website, among various other creative projects.

In past lives, she’s been a teacher (of English, composition, and French), a silversmith, and a volunteer lion tamer. Most notably, Swazzi came out of the advertising industry relatively unscathed and survived a year teaching disgruntled teenagers at a bicultural high school in Mexico. (After that, working with lions was a breeze.)

She has a Master of Arts in comparative literature, with emphasis in multicultural literature and children’s literature, and B.A.’s in both journalism (advertising emphasis) and French. (Magna Cum Laude and outstanding graduate in both departments.)

A native of New Mexico, Swazzi spent her childhood migrating between old and New Mexico, before moving to the U.S. as a teenager. Then followed 15 years in California, a year in France, 16 in Mexico, and many, many adventures. She recently moved back to the U.S. and is on a quest for the perfect opportunity to use her many skills for the greater good.

When she’s not reading, writing, or taking pictures, she’s planning her next adventure, hiking, painting, gardening, restoring furniture, playing with her dogs and cats, swing dancing, or playing around at tennis or yoga.

Swazzi speaks English, Spanish, French, and WordPress fluently. She gets along quite well in Italian, CSS, HTML and social media.

Welcome to the Republic of Swazzi

The Republic of Swazzi (note the double Z) is vast and quirky place located entirely in my head. In modern technical parlance, it’s actually a blog. But the powers that be (me, myself, I) think that blog is a frumpy, unpoetic little word,…

Elizabeth Gilbert Makes Big Magic

I'd scrolled past Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear online, or rather Amazon had thrown it at me (You, you're the perfect sucker for this, whispered the marketing department.) I was considering buying it, when I tripped over an…

Are You Ok? Breathing Underwater for Beginners

After one too many free margaritas, Kris convinced me to take the beginner’s SCUBA course offered by the resort. Certified years before, she’s a dive fanatic. “You’ll never forget it.” She promised as she sipped, raising her eyebrows meaningfully over the salty rim. She’s right. I won’t forget it. Mostly because, as much as I adore the sea, I only trust it as far as I can touch. I am terrified of deep water.

The Great Gringas of San Miguel

San Miguel is chock full of colorful, feisty, independent women. The question is: Are these mujeres that way when they come, or does SMA make them so? The other day, I ran into Anne, one of our many guests-turned-residents (and one of my…
